Out and About

Treetops is located in Banavie, which is situated just 3 miles from Fort William, the Outdoor Capital of the UK. Fort William is dominated by imposing mountains and towering above them all is Ben Nevis the highest mountain in the UK.

The house is located just 10 minutes walk from the famous Neptunes Staircase, a series of 9 locks on the Caledonian Canal which raise the canal level 64ft. You will find that the pleasant walk along the towpath offers spectacular views of Loch Linnhe and Ben Nevis.

Also nearby, within walking distance infact, is the Treasures of the Earth Exhibition. This fascinating exhibition has a wide variety of exhibits showcasing the natural treasures that come from within the earth.

You will find that Fort William is an ideal base for visiting the whole of the north west of Scotland, being within easy reach of Inverness, Glencoe, Oban and Mallaig with the ferry to the Isle of Skye and the Hebrides.

During the summer, the Jacobite steam train runs between Fort William and Mallaig, and is a treat not to be missed.

Just 15 miles from Treetops, up the Road to the Isles, is the historic village of Glenfinnan. This is the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie famously raised his standard in 1745. The Glenfinnan monument now stands as a lasting testimony to this event.

In addition you might like to see the railway viaduct made famous in the recent series of Harry Potter films. This charming little village also has an interesting railway museum with adjacent dining car.

Further along the Road to the Isles are the coastal villages of Arisaig and Morar which have beautiful beaches and stunning views to the islands of Rhum, Muck, Eigg and of course Skye.

Heading South from Fort William you can either travel towards Glencoe, which apart from stunning scenery has a national trust visitor centre, or to the coastal port of Oban. If you go to Oban why not visit the seal sanctuary on the way.

The Nevis Range ski centre and gondola is not to be missed. The gondola's effortlessly take you to 2150ft from where you are treated to spectacular views over Lochaber. In winter skiers and snowboarders fill the slopes.

Lochaber is home to some excellent mountain bike trails which cater for all standards of rider. Indeed the Mountain Bike world championships will be held here in 2007 with the World Cup already making an annual visit. Find out more about the great riding on offer.

The Ben Nevis Distillery is ideal for those wanting to find out more about the process of making the whisky for which Scotland is so famous. At the end of the guided tour you will even get a chance to taste the finished product!
